Open Streets Day 2019

OPEN STREETS DAY 2019

MOVE was appointed by ISCA as the national coordinator and entrusted us with the organisation and implementation of the Open Streets Day 2019, which is part of the NowWeMOVE campaign and supports the European Week of Sport #BeActive.

Today, public streets and urban areas of European cities were transformed into venues for recreational physical activity, playing, dancing and cycling.

On this occasion, MOVE joined forces with the Żejtun Local Council and organised street events, which let people discover their neighbourhood from a different perspective. Since the Open Streets Day coincided with the Car-Free Day, roads leading to the Main Sqaure, and the Main Square itself, were closed for traffic, in line with the activity’s aim of giving the streets back to the people and to transform such spaces usually taken over by cars in temporary playgrounds for the community to enjoy and to play and be active together, making the experience even more memorable.

The activities included a street football tournament, where a five-a-side football pitch was set up in the main square, street basketball, as well as traditional games including rope skipping, boċċi and hopscotch.

Serving as a bridge between the European Mobility Week and the European Week of Sport, Open Streets Day 2019 promoted environmentally-friendly modes of active transport, as well as encouraged citizens to celebrate the joy of being active.
